Caput nonum: QUO VADIS '19

Salve Internet,

I am Carmine Siena from Corvo Bianco Entertainment. Welcome back to the devlog series regarding the development of Villanus: Imperium Romanum. It is time again to open together the next chapter, which is chapter number nine.

As I stated in the last devlog, I was participating in the QUO VADIS, the European video games developers conference in Berlin. Today, I want to tell you a little bit about my travel to the German capital and let you know how a conference like this one looks like. Unfortunately, due to being completely involved in the conference, I completely forgot to take photographs or even shoot a devlog at the location itself. So, I hope you do not mind me telling you all this in the usual devlog manner.

I have been in Berlin for three whole days: from Sunday early afternoon to Wednesday afternoon. As you might know, Cologne is in the west of Germany and Berlin in the north-east. So, I decided to travel by plane. The flight took around 40 to 50 minutes and, fortunately, without any delays, I landed as planned. Before going straight to my hotel in the south of Berlin, I decided to meet up with my cousin who is currently living in Berlin, to have a few beers and a little chat. Cheers to Felix!

The conference itself started Monday morning at 9.00 am. The venue was the Kulturbrauerei, a very hip and beautiful event location in the north of Berlin which used to be a brewery, hence the name (Brauerei is German for brewery). After collecting my participant's badge – you might have seen it on social media – I decided to first have a look into the overall day's schedule and then to visit the booths of the different companies who presented themselves. Important to know is that the conference was sub-divided into eight summits: four per day and always two simultaneously.

For the first day I decided to go to the Marketing Summit in the morning and, after the lunch break, participated in the Financing and Funding Summit. As the names suggest, both are rather dry topics in terms of creativity, but the business student inside of me found all of the keynotes and panels very interesting. And both topics are obviously very important for a games studio as such. The second day started really, really interestingly with the PC Games Developers Summit. Loads of splendid presentations and two marvellous panels, one of which was discussing the future of PC gaming in times of Google Stadia etc. Afterwards, I then had a closer look into academic research in the field of games by participating in the Games Study and Research Summit. This was also very interesting, since I am always doing research in this area when I need to write papers or theses.

So as you can see, a conference like the QUO VADIS is very diverse with loads of different topics and networking possibilities.
